Mulled wine Recommendations from local wine shops
(alphabetical)
Ale Jail & Wine Thief
(St. Paul: Nathan Wine Specialist)
Flaco Tempranillo
A perfect middle of the road Tempranillo that will compliment the warming spices with a light fruit note!
Pannonica zweigelt
Have more fun with this zweigelt! With more body and robust nature, it will definitely shine through in a mulled wine.
France 44 Wine Shop
(Linden Hills/ Minneapolis: Dustin Wine Specialist)
Borsao Garnacha
This wine is probably the most user-friendly reds on the planet! Quote me. Approachable, does not dominate the flavor palette, and adds balance to the spices.
OVR
If you don’t pick this one up to try, I will! A little higher acidity than what is accustomed in mulled wines, is what makes this one a playful fit with our spice sachet.
Stinson Wine, Beer, and Spirits
(Northeast Minneapolis: Daniel Wine Specialist)
Zinfandel & Cabernet Sauvignon
Daniel at Stinson’s gave a lot of wonderful options that range from middle of the road fruit and body, to Lapis Luna Zinfandel that would play around and compliment the orange and turmeric notes in our Helgolander!
Thomas Liquors
(St. Paul: Pete Wine Specialist)
Protocolo Tempranillo & Castillo de Monseran
These two table reds will win your heart over by their flexibility, aromas, and spiciness. Like a few other Garnacha (Grenache) Monseran will certainly be a key role in providing fruit flavors that are prominent in a lot of Spanish wines.
Zipps Liquors
(Cedar-Riverside/ Minneapolis: Aaron Wine Specialist)
Protocolo Tempranillo
This is the second time this Tempranillo has been recommended, so you know that it is just THAT good for a mulled wine… And at $8, get out of here with your spiciness…
La Miraja Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato
$23.99, now I hear what you’re thinking in your head, because I’m right there with you… It’s a lot to shell out for a mulled wine , but if you are looking for rare red to be amplified by an amaro, then this is it… A unique red with notes of flowers, raspberry, and earth to make for a dynamic pairing with the amaro. I love this wine on it’s own and in any situation, to be honest. Just be sure to pour yourself a glass while your mulled wine is cooking :)
