D.W Amaretto Sour feat. American Single Malt

Dampfwerk Holiday Series

Featuring: Neil Mckenzie (Bartender)

We are kick-starting our holiday cocktail series with Neil’s take on an amaretto sour!

After pestering Neil about how he landed on this recipe and flavor pairing, this is what he had to say:

“I really enjoy amaretto sours, but find that they are too sweet for me. I was with my sister and had some leftover caramelized yam syrup and thought that I would play around with flavors. I decided to cut the amaretto with single malt whiskey and found that the flavor still held up to the strong almond flavor.

This is now my go-to way of making amaretto sours.”

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Dampfwerk Single Malt Whiskey

  • 1 oz Luxardo Amaretto

  • ¾ oz lemon juice

  • ½ oz clove syrup

  • egg white

  • garnish: grated nutmeg

Directions

As Neil calls it, he reverse mimed this cocktail. Add all ingredients together (sans egg white and nutmeg) with ice into your shaking tins. Shake until proper dilution and strain into an empty tin.

Add your egg white and dry shake (no ice). Strain into a coupe and garnish with some grated nutmeg.

Prost!

Clove Syrup

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup whole cloves

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup sugar

Directions

Add all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to a low simmer and let it do its thing for 10 minutes.

Meet Neil.

Neil made his way back to Minneapolis after being up north at a family ran restaurant during the pandemic.

He’s been all over the place; Minneapolis, New Orleans, India, Turkey, and Shanghai. Sit in front of him at our bar and strike up a conversation about food, traveling, and Wu-Tang.
